Jamaica welcomes Miss Nightingale, an idyllic location for Solar Design Technology and Sustainable living
Jamaica welcomes Miss Nightingale©,
an idyllic location for Solar Design Technology and Sustainable living
With an abundance of exotic beaches, restaurants, spars and hotels that include mesmerizing sunset landscape views, Jamaica is the ideal location for Solar Design Technology and Sustainable living.
Targets to increase the use of renewable energy up to 30 percent by 2030 can easily be achieved by implementing sustainable technology in the tourist industry and supporting campaigns for more investments to be made by the government and the private sector that ensure an affordable and environmentally conscious transition from non-renewable to renewable energy.
According to representatives in the field, Jamaica is highly confident that the country can meet and even exceed these expectations as it tackles demands for reducing the cost of supplying electricity to remote and congested areas across the country.
It is estimated that Jamaica could save billions of dollars in the energy transition from fossil fuels such as coal, gas and petroleum to clean solar power and considering that much of its expenditure and income is surrounded by the leisure and tourist industry, these sectors have a huge responsibility towards reducing the social and environmental impact of tourism and curbing the effects of climate change by improving the natural life style and well being of Jamaican citizens.
As part of a Miss Solar Light campaign for Nature and the empowerment of people with limited access to affordable electricity, Annet van Egmond (co-founder of Brand van Edmond lighting enterprise) has designed a Hi-Tech candle lamp in collaboration with WWF, that provides more than 60 hours of free solar light. This offers many lifestyle changing solutions for the increased environmental concerns and the effect that the consumption of energy from the tourist and hospitality industry is having on fair access and distribution of new sustainable technology that can improve the negative impact that the consumer industry is having on the local economy and environment.

During this years event, the MissNightingale© lamps were proudly exhibited alongside other sustainable lifestyle products at Yksi – Next Way of Living, Cartoni Design and De Luytervelde restaurant.
Annet van Egmond also joined the Women in Tech Conference at the High Tech Campus in Eindhoven, to share new insight into the influence that Women are gaining in the field of Technology and Sustainable Design.
To preview the event, Annet van Egmond was invited for a presentation at het Hoofdkantoor, a popular design boutique in Bussum, where she told the story to an audience of influential female professionals and enthusiasts in sustainable design products, the journey of how she overcame obstacles in the manufacturing, engineering and product design process to bring her new Miss Nightingale lamps to the world.
This year, Dutch Design Week was especially focussed on Hi-tech, Sustainable products and materials. This was very beneficial for gaining exposure for the Miss Nightingale© lamps, that are produced using recyclable plastics and features solar charging technology with energy efficient LED with four modes of lighting for up to 60 hours.
There was also a lot of interest in the Miss Solar Light mission for Nature, where Annet van Egmond expanded on what motivated her new start-up which involved her shift from producing exclusive lighting sculptures for hi-profile clients from Rappers to Royalty, to more eco-friendly lighting that’s more accessible, sustainable and conscious of our social responsibility to our Planet.
A special highlight of the occasion was the first Women in Tech Conference at the Hi-tech University of Eindhoven, with an impressive attendance of 300 Women that included inspiring presentations by speakers who joined the VIP dinner where the discussion continued regarding the Miss Solar Light campaign, in co-operation with WWF, to use sales of the Miss Nightingale Lamp to fund Nature conservation at the Southern African Wildlife College as one of their Ambassadors.

Annet van Egmond will reflect on her new business venture at Dutch Design Week 2018
Dutch Design Week. Saturday October 20th.
Meet the maker 14.00 at Yksi, Torenallee 22-04 in Eindhoven.
From the start of her career, Annet van Egmond is stimulating Dutch Design and exploring new horizons, representing a diverse portfolio of collaborations with talented Dutch designers.
Since the 80s, she enlightened design trends with an organic style of welding metal sculptures in the garage of her parents where she, later together with her former partner, established “Brand van Egmond”, a global leader in the Design and Lighting industry.
In 2014, Annet van Egmond decided to influence her conscious way of approaching design into the light industry by turning to a free and accessible source of energy,… the Sun,…and an innovative ecological way to engineering solutions in the design process that are less harmful to Nature and our Planet.
Inspired by her passion for Wildlife and Nature, she created a new venture called Miss Solar Light© with Design, Nature, Sustainability and the empowerment of Women at the heart of her new brand and introduced an eco-friendly solar light succinctly entitled… Miss Nightingale©
For the occasion of the Dutch Design Week, Annet wants to share the story of her journey in which she transitioned from working on one-off highly customized Art lighting sculptures to Hi-Tech sustainable volume lighting lamps.
Come and get inspired:

Miss Nightingale© launched on the occasion of Earth Hour
Miss Nightingale© launched on the occasion of Earth Hour
Saturday March 24th was this year’s timing for the annual Earth Hour event. Earth Hour is an initiative of the World Wildlife Fund for Nature WWF to draw attention to the threats our Planet Earth is faced with. Every year lights at monumental buildings globally are switched off for one hour. The iconic Erasmus Bridge in Rotterdam was the 2018 location in The Netherlands with the Dutch national Broadcaster NOS covering the event live. The former Dutch astronaut, André Kuipers, ambassador of WWF pressed the red bottom and then the lights were switched off and the bridge turned dark.
Especially for the occasion and to support and enhance WWF’s message, Light Designer Annet van Egmond introduced a brand new product to the market. The “Miss Nightingale”, referring to the well-known nurse with her burning candle, is iconic like the Erasmus Bridge. During day time the product uses the eternal source of energy, the Sun, to charge its battery. The battery feeds the very energy efficient LED lamp when it is dark. The product itself is made out of recycled plastic. With this product Annet combines her specific skills for design with her passion for Nature.
“I want to shine a light on our planet Earth, it is my ambition to positively influence the lives of people around the world through the use of an abundant available and free source, namely the sun”.

Our planets gain is everyone’s gain.
